We know that many of the conclusions on human dynamics reached by social scientists are based on the dynamics in the animal world discovered through observation and research and generalised to humans. Hence, this natural renunciation of sexual intimacy among some animals for the sake of some noble purpose can be generalised to humans as well. Renunciation of genital sexual intimacy among humans is not an aberration, it can be life enhancing. This is also the view that the Church holds. Vatican II, for example, clearly rejects the notion that lack of genital sexual intimacy is an obstacle to growing in human maturity or that complete continence is impossible {Perfectae Caritatis, 1966, no. 12).
