International comparative research has shown that in past decades there has been a successive
shift of world-wide conflicts from the interstate to the domestic arena.
Our analysis also corroborates this finding for Asia. As in most other regions of the world, the number
of multi- and bilateral conflicts has steadily fallen below that for domestic conflicts as of the
start of data collection.
