Channel members can increase buyer-seller contact by expanding the broker's role within the channel or promoting innovations such as the waste exchange. Cost-effective recycling requires greater communication within the channel and a reduction in the search process between buyer and seller.Improvements in channel performance require actions such as expanding the capacity to move increased volumes of a commodity, improving the flexibility in transport to move recyclable products, and providing incentives in the accumulation function. The introduction of new technology, coupled with improved sorting capabilities, will increase capacity, enable higher density shipments, and improve channel performance through lower transport costs. Greater flexibility in transport can improve performance through compaction at the point of collection, reducing handling requirements, and determining cost-effective MRF locations through facility location modelling. Municipalities must also ascertain the most effective techniques for obtaining consumer cooperation in the accumulation of recyclable material.
