However what we have witnessed in the ensuing years is an increasing popularity of derivative versions of the literature review, characterised under the expression in our title as 'systematic approaches'. More than anything this has emphasised that the degree to which any review is systematic lies on a continuum that runs from implicit expert commentary through to gold standard systematic review.
