One of the new initiatives implemented is the introduction of a new purchasing card program that allows ship managers to make timely purchases in ports or order online for specialty product. The immediate result has added visibility to the purchasing department that was then able to track consumption patterns and also see which merchants ship’s managers used repeatedly. Based on this data, it was then decided to arrange for specific contracts with large national retailers who were often used. It now allows ships to make purchases at the same store while enjoying a pre-negotiated dis- count and facilitates the processing of payments, which comes under a consolidated invoice from the merchants for all purchases.
