In recent years it has been alleged that antidepressant drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft are linked with an increased risk of suicide and violence. More than 50 million people worldwide, many of them young adults and children, have used these drugs to counter depression and anxiety. In the mid-1990s, the fami¬lies of the victims of a multiple murder suicide sued Eli Lilly, maker of Prozac, alleging that Lilly withheld data critical of the drug's safety from the FDA. Lilly was acquitted at trial, but the verdict was later invalidated when it was dis¬closed that Lilly had secretly reached a financial settlement with the families.
