Loose practices of cost accounting are common. Many course programs are operated as extensions of the larger programs of sponsoring organizations and use space and administrative services that are not charged directly to them. It is therefore practically impossible to make any kind of meaningful study of the comparative costs of operation of different adult-education programs. This practice also makes it difficult for the sponsoring organization to arrive at any accurate estimate of the cost of operating a program.
