I’ve had a privilege to watch the first ballet-opera performed in Thailand. Maestro Somtow Sucharitkul has taken his time to compose this over a period of many years. He staged world’s premier of each suite one at a time. Finally, the work of art is completed and makes a debut. It is as grand as it should be.
Suriyothai is a name of Thai Queen during Ayudhya period. She accompanied her husband to the battle and was killed in an attempt to safeguard her husband from the enemy. This part of history is well known.
The orchestra was conducted by Trisdee Na Patalung, world renowned conductor. With Somtow as composer, music is excellent. Solo part adds perfection to the scene, especially when the spirit of Queen Suriyothai sings from heaven. I think only Somtow could think of using monk’s chanting verses as choral lyrics – very intuitive indeed.
The whole show was neat and thoughtful. Designs are in every part: – costume, choreography, props, hair or lighting. This is a link to official rough cut of this world premier show.
