According to Mayhew, Flay and Mott,9 based upon examination of prior research studies,10-12 the stages of smoking uptake include the: (a) pre-contemplation stage (one has never smoked and never thought to start smoking); (b) contemplation or preparatory stage (one begins to think about smoking); (c) initiation ortriedstage(onetriestheirfirstfewcigarettes);(d) experimentation/addition stage (tobacco is repeatedly, but irregularly used); (e) regular smoking stage (one smokes regularly); and (f) established smoking stage (one has a strong desire to smoke)
