Is there any decade so maligned, sartorially speaking, as the 1980s? With a few notable exceptions (Desperately Seeking Susan, we’re looking at you), its legacy is sort of a punch line where clothes are concerned. But Fall has found fashion in the midst of something resembling a sea change. While the Spring shows were undeniably the province of peace, love, and freewheeling ’70s bohemia, Fall found the ’80s enjoying a slice of the limelight. Jonathan Anderson led the charge, turning out a full-blast, New Wave confection at his eponymous label—unmistakably beholden to the era yet directional and firmly planted on this side of the millennium. He did it again at Loewe, sending out models in deliciously dated color combos and oversize wraparounds that would do Grace Jones proud. And Anderson wasn’t the only one who got in on the action. “I didn’t start out thinking, ‘OK, this season I’m going to go ’80s.’ It doesn’t work like that,” Angela Missoni told Style.com of her own dalliances with the decade this season. “I never, never look back. I never go to the archives.” Instead, she began with Vanessa Beecroft and the artist’s myriad nude bodysuits. “I felt the [idea] of going more body-conscious. Then that brought it to the ’80s.” Add in a dash of Memphis Milano and you had the makings of an electric collection. Among Missoni’s own icons of the era? Why, Grace Jones, of course.
