For this company the sorting of waste is done continuously during the cruise and separated in waste streams. The only waste being discharge in open sea is treated black water, grey water, and food leftovers, which are blended with seawater at time of discharge. All other streams of waste have to be properly landed at ports. Depending on the facilities available during the itinerary, it may be landed at a more suitable port during the middle of the trip. Therefore in some itineraries, unloading of material can be spread over few days, and hence reduce the strain on turnaround day. One main incentive for the crew to ensure proper recycling of re- cyclables is that all money collected from this program is given to the ship’s crew welfare fund. Fig. 3 shows the flow of goods on a typical turnaround day based on observations of average times at the dock.
