Contemporary Anomie/Strain Approaches
Focus “on relationships in which others prevent the individual from achieving positively valued goals,” according to Robert Agnew, whose institutional anomie theory (IAT) expands the concept of anomie beyond the
failure of one to achieve desired goals. His categories of
strain are enumerated in Figure 5.1. Agnew’s work
includes the collaboration of others, such as Lisa M.
Broidy. Contemporary researchers also include significant work by Steven F. Messner and Richard Rosenfeld,
who based their institutional anomie theory on an analysis of profit-motivated crimes.
