between the breakwaters were wide enough to accommodate 2 boats sailing in the opposite direction. The breakwaters did not prevent fishermen from moving their boats up the shore. They also provided shelters from storm waves since their crest elevations were þ3.70 m above the MSL (Fig. 7d). The 10-m beach widening behind the breakwaters was carried out (Fig. 7a). Nourishment sand came from sediment deposited in nearby clogged creeks and river mouths. The sand extraction from the creeks and rivers did not encounter community resistance because the sand removal would enhance boat navigation and flushing of wastewater dis- charged from inland shrimp farms.
