Dairy manure is a major waste product of agro-ecosystems. Its
inappropriate disposal can create environmental problems, such as
bad odors, leaching of nitrates and other pollutants into groundwater,
eutrophication of lakes caused by runoff of nitrogen and
phosphorous.
Composting is an effective way to reduce organic solid waste,
which is an accelerated mode of natural decomposition of organic
debris achieved by microorganisms (bacteria, actinomycetes and
fungi) under controlled environmental conditions. Proper composting
results in thermophilic temperatures due to generation
of microbial metabolic heat which can effectively destroy pathogens
and weed seeds, and converts biodegradable solid organic
matter into a stable humus-like substance which can be handled,
stored, and/or applied to land without adversely affecting environment.
Therefore, more and more attention was paid to composting
