Ammonia gas exposure is associated with a range of upper respiratory symptomatology, including severe cases of chemical pneumonitis and intense pulmonary inflammation. The acute and chronic lung conditions associated with ammonia exposure that we were able to document from the literature are given in Table 2.9-17 Although interstitial lung disease is an uncommon effect of ammonia exposure, it has been reported both as a consequence of acute exposure in industrial accidents9-13 and as a result of chronic low-dose exposure to anhydrous ammonia and ammonium hydroxide.9,11-17
