It will
teach you about important events in
the history of the United States. You also
will fnd many beautiful pictures of the events
and people who shaped that history.
This is the frst in a series of books to help people
learn the English language. Each of our Learner
English books will have a different topic that teach-
es readers about the United States and helps them
understand new words.
Some words will appear in boldface type. You will
fnd their meanings, or defnitions, in a brightly
colored box on the same page, along with examples
of how to use the word.
As in other languages, English has many words
that may have two, three, or more meanings. In
this book, only the meaning of a word as it is used
on that page is listed.
If you want to learn other meanings or ways the
words in this book can be used, and if you have
access to the Internet, free dictionaries are avail-
able. All the defnitions in this book come from
