The Aceh movement begun in 1976 was spearheaded by the Aceh Sumatra National Liberation Front (GAM)
Rich in natural resources, notably oil and natural gas, Aceh complained for decades that the revenue accruing were not used to benefit the people of the province.
The first major positive response came from president Wahid who assured them in late 1999 that, short of independence, all their demands, including an equitable share of the revenue from oil and gas would be granted.
