Every year, Cargolux flies up to 3,000 horses. With values up to US$ 5 million for a single race horse, it gives new meaning to the term ‘special handling’. Our base at Luxembourg airport is an authorized border inspection post with an on-site veterinarian’s office. It ensures that horses are kept in a fully contained and noise-protected area. There are plenty more reasons why customers entrust Cargolux with their horse shipments: a dedicated internal training program, overnight accommodation and, above all, personal attention. No horse is ever left without supervision and every flight is met, no matter what time. Simply put, we regard each horse as a special responsibility.
With three horses per HMC horse stall, Cargolux can carry 78 horses per flight on its B747-400 freighters, or 90 on the 747-8F. Cargolux’s modern 747 freighters are ideally suited for horse transports; they have a multi-zone air conditioning system that allows for an optimal airflow and a more comfortable ride. Every transport must be accompanied by at least one groom for every six horses. The grooms must be certified and experienced in the handling of horses during transport and Cargolux requires its ground staff to be current in live animal loading and handling regulations.
