In conducting the interview the counselor (1) listens attentively, giving
suggestions in the early stages of counseling and more specific suggestions in
later stages; (2) asks questions to clarify the client's self-understanding; (3)
explains the meaning of the client's interests, abilities, and personality
traits; (4) outlines a stepwise progression to ultimate decision making; and (5)
may serve as an adviser by making decisions as to what will stimulate the client
to start taking responsibility for his or her own actions
