Older individuals are at increased risk of more serious illness due to infections, including seasonal influenza and pneumococcal disease. Travel as part of a large group, which may include tourists from regions of the world where influenza viruses are circulating, can be a risk for influenza at any time of year. Cruise ship travel is a prime example of this risk (Brotherton et al 2003). In the UK, seasonal influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are offered routinely to those aged 65 years or older; the travel health consultation presents an opportunity to ensure these are in date.
