Gates, B. (2010) argues for the crucial need to develop zero emission technologies to tackle global warming. One of his reasons is that energy price and climate are key factors in alleviating poverty. In discussing the factors of carbon emissions, he states that the amount of CO2 emitted per unit of energy is the most pivotal as it can be varied to zero. This leads him on to the current methods of harvesting energy with minimal carbon emissions which include Carbon Capture & Storage, Nuclear and the renewable sources. He feels that nuclear power is the most feasible and mentions about his hefty investments on TerraPower, a technology which he believes to have tremendous potentials in energy production. Lastly, he claims that countries are not investing enough into research and development. Overall, Gates’ speech is logically structured and consists of a range of persuasive speech techniques. Despite that, his speech was largely unconvincing due to an over usage of emotive language, lack of empirical evidences and presence of financial incentives.
