The second step in MANOVA is that if the overall F-test shows the centroid (vector) of means of the dependent variables is not the same for all the groups formed by the categories of the independent variables, post-hoc univariate F tests of group differences are used to determine just which group means differ significantly from others. This helps specify the exact nature of the overall effect determined by the F test. Pairwise multiple comparison tests test each pair of groups to identify similarities and differences. Multiple comparison procedures and post hoc tests are discussed more extensively in the corresponding section under ANOVA.
