At 2 in the morning, the Hinton Refrigeration Co. after-hours operator received an emergency call from an Oklahoma City grocery store owner. A frozen food unit was on the fritz and needed immediate service. The operator roused a technician in the area who drove his company truck to the job. Crisis averted.
Within the next few days, office manager Sharon Tucker got a phone call from the store owner about his bill.
He was telling us our guy was on the job for like two hours, tops, Tucker said. We knew it had been closer to four, but he just didn't think that was the case.
So we checked our Locarta logs. - That pretty much took care of the problem.
Hinton Refrigeration has been using a Locarta Technologies vehicle tracking system in about half of its 18-truck fleet since November. Tucker said in that time the system has more than paid for itself in fuel costs, overtime payroll - and, of course, disputed client billings.
Before we could not track our total mileage; we weren't sure how much our guys were driving each day, she said, or how much time they spent on a job. This has been really beneficial. We're still looking at the numbers and starting to work out route plans.
A 2003 study by market researcher C.J. Driscoll & Associates revealed more than 1 million fleet vehicles nationwide were equipped with some sort of automated tracking system, including about a quarter of the nation's 1.3 million long-haul trucks. And the number of commercial fleet vehicles equipped with such devices - such as limousines, buses and smaller building supply trucks - had doubled over the past three years, the study found.
Locarta is just one of the many tracking device products available on the market now. Another industry leader, FleetMinder, uses a Global Positional Satellite (GPS) system to track vehicles for reporting data that includes routes, stops, total mileage and even the number of times a vehicle's doors are opened and closed. The FleetMinder data can be overlaid on a map program for fine- tuning route plans and cutting back on unprofitable side trips.
Improved technology has made such systems more affordable over the years. In the 1980s, for example, before a GPS system orbited the planet, a fleet owner could spend as much as $35,000 for private satellites to track trucks, industry experts said.
A GPS system works by triangulating radio signals received by a satellite system placed in Earth's orbit by the U.S. government. By comparing the reception times from at least three satellites, a GPS program can determine a user's position as precisely as a few meters. The first satellite was placed in orbit in 1978; the latest was put in place in 1994.
The Locarta product used by Hinton Refrigeration is promoted by the company as being able to help cut fuel costs an average of 8 percent to 10 percent due to lower speeds and reduced idling, save on overtime expenses, lower communication costs and help in the recovery of stolen vehicles.
Tucker said company owner Larry Hinton was careful to explain to his crew that he wasn't looking over their shoulders out of distrust; the company merely needed to find ways to trim unnecessary costs, she said.
Locarta advertises that an average 30-vehicle delivery fleet wastes as much as $1,700 per month - 30 trucks times 20 wasted miles each times 22 working days, using fuel at 12 miles per gallon at $1.55 per gallon. A service fleet can save even more, the company estimates.
The drivers didn't like it to begin with; some of them were really upset, very opposed to it, Tucker said.
It's not uncommon for drivers to take home the company's one-ton pickups overnight.
Now when they want to borrow a truck for something they're sure to tell us in advance, said Tucker. It's made them, and us, more aware of their use of company resources.
