The years pass and his doctors have changed once more. Pale, almost bony and with now just a hurtful dream of maybe ending this one day, E sees as his current chief doctor talks to another. He doesn’t know who he is, and he wonders if he’ll be a new doctor working with him. Doctors have hidden him, almost as an unspeakable secret; E is no longer allowed to cross the hospital’s hallways, instead he is confined to a simple room on the last floor.
"We cannot have people looking at you, E-kun." The doctor won’t say anything else about why. “It’s better if you stay in your room. Your health would be benefited." Yes, that’s a nice way to say that people cannot bare see him because he’s a monster. And now he cannot hide it like before, because half his face has been covered, or one might even say ‘replaced’, with a machine’s. A long horn sticks out of the top of his left face and instead of a pupil, there’s only a small glass that works as eye. He doesn’t feel human anymore.
Is he human? He vaguely remembers the time as a child, when he would laugh with other kids about their dreams and what they’d become…those memories almost seem fake now. They’re so distant…so unreal.
A month later there is a big commotion on the room besides his. E isn’t that interested in what’s causing the commotion at first, but after the sounds of struggle last for more than a minute he gets off bed and and walks to the door, peeking. He sees four doctors, two nurses and two people he doesn’t recognize- a boy and a girl. But that’s not what captures his attention, what makes his be surprised is the fact that half their faces are also like his own.
