In rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), developed by Albert Ellis (see Ellis, Gordon, Neenan & Palmer 1997) it is hypothesized that what we label stress or distress is largely determined not by the unpleasant events of stressors people experience in their lives but mainly by their irrational (rigid, inflexible, illogical, unempirical, unhelpful ) beliefs about what is happening to them. These beliefs primarily consist of dogmatic and absolutist demands and commands should, musts, have tos and got tos-which can lead to illogical conclusions such as: I am worthlessl it’s awful; I con’t stand it. The latter are also known as evaluative dervatives
